Stocks plunge after US hiring dries up in August (AP)

NEW YORK ? A dismal jobs report caused stocks to plunge Friday.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 253 points, or 2.2 percent, wiping out its gains for the week. All 30 stocks in the average fell.

No jobs were added in the U.S. last month, the government said early Friday. It was the worst employment report in 11 months and renewed fears that another recession could be on the way. The yield on the 10-year note briefly fell below 2 percent and gold jumped $48 an ounce as cash flowed into investments seen as less risky than stocks.

"It's certainly ugly," said Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial.

European markets followed U.S. stocks lower. They were already down on reports that talks between Greece and international lenders over that country's debt crisis were breaking down. Germany's DAX closed down 3.4 percent; France's CAC-40 lost 3.6 percent.

The lack of hiring in the U.S. last month surprised investors. Economists were expecting 93,000 jobs to be added. Previously reported hiring figures for June and July were also revised lower. The average work week declined and hourly earnings fell. The unemployment rate held steady at 9.1 percent. The rate has been above 9 percent in all but two months since May 2009.

Kleintop said the jobs report didn't change his view that the economy was headed for a stretch of weak economic growth, not a recession. He said the figures were likely skewed by unusual events that may have made employers reluctant to add jobs in August.

The Labor Department's report relies on data collected from surveys of households and businesses in the second week of August. That's right after Standard & Poor's removed the country's AAA credit rating and fears mounted that Europe's banking crisis could spread to the U.S. Television screens were filled with images of riots in London.

"I'm not surprised that businesses weren't doing too much hiring in that environment," Kleintop said.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 253.31 points to close at 11,240.26. It was the biggest fall in two weeks. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 30.45, or 2.5 percent, to 1,173.97.

The Dow fell 0.4 percent for the week, the S&P 0.2 percent. Both indexes have fallen five of the past six weeks.

The Nasdaq composite fell 65.71, or 2.6 percent, to 2,480.33. The technology-heavy index eked out a gain of 0.48 point for the week.

Cash poured into Treasurys and gold, assets believed to be safer bets during a weak economy. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.00 percent, and briefly traded below that level. It was 2.14 percent shortly before the report came out. Yields fall when demand for bonds increases.

The price of gold rose 2.8 percent to $1,880. Fears that a stalling economy could reduce demand for oil and gasoline pushed benchmark crude oil down $2.48, or 2.8 percent, to $86.45.

Trading volume was thin ahead of the Labor Day weekend at 3.8 billion shares, 11 percent below the average volume for the year. Low volume can result in larger-than-usual moves in stock indexes. When fewer traders are active in the market, large buy and sell orders can move stock prices more than they would on a typical day.

The VIX, a measure of stock market volatility, rose 6.6 percent to 34. The index has fallen from a recent high of 48 on Aug. 8, when the Dow lost 634 points following a downgrade of the U.S. government's credit rating. The VIX traded below 20 for most of the year.

Fears of another recession led to wild market swings last month as global growth slowed and Europe's debt crisis flared up again. Consumer confidence plunged in August to a two-year low. A key category that tracks business investment fell sharply in July. Recent data were more encouraging, suggesting weak but steady economic expansion.

Bank of America Corp., the country's largest bank, sank 8 percent after The Wall Street Journal reported that regulators had asked it to develop emergency plans because of its sagging share price and the sluggish economy. Bank of America is down 45 percent this year, largely on concerns about legal costs related to shoddy mortgage investments that it sold.

Other big banks dropped on separate reports that the government is preparing to sue some of them, also over mortgage investments they sold that lost value when the housing market collapsed. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, announced the lawsuit against 17 banks after the market closed.

The FHFA says the banks lied about the quality of loans that they pooled together and sold as securities. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley fell 5 percent. Wells Fargo & Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. each lost about 4 percent.

Peter Tchir, a former trader who now runs the hedge fund TF Market Advisors, said stocks will likely be dragged down in the coming weeks by high unemployment, weak spending and a possible default by Greece, which he sees as increasingly likely.

"I expect that the S&P will go back below 1,100 sometime in September," he said. "Whether we hit a recession or a contraction or not, it'll remain weak, and Europe is going to hit a wall where the banks are going to have to take losses." That would also hurt U.S. banks, he said.

Netflix Inc. plunged 9 percent after talks collapsed with a key provider of movies and TV shows. Starz Entertainment said late Thursday that it won't renew a contract that allows Netflix to stream recently released movies and shows.

The Dow, S&P and Nasdaq all had their worst August since 2001 as economic fears and instability in financial markets and European banks added to investors' worries.

Study finds more gut reaction to arthritis drugs; Stomach acid-suppressing drugs appear to damage small intestine

ScienceDaily (Sep. 1, 2011) ? Patients often take drugs to lower stomach acid and reduce the chances they will develop ulcers from taking their anti-inflammatory drugs for conditions such as arthritis, but the combination may be causing major problems for their small intestines, McMaster researchers have found.

A team from the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute has found those stomach acid-reducing drugs, known as proton pump inhibitors, may actually be aggravating damage in the small intestine caused by the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDs.

In a study published in the medical journal Gastroenterology, principal investigator John Wallace says the extent of the hard-to-detect damage caused to the small intestine has only recently been discovered through use of small video cameras swallowed like pills.

"Suppressing acid secretion is effective for protecting the stomach from damage caused by NSAIDs, but these drugs appear to be shifting the damage from the stomach to the small intestine, where the ulcers may be more dangerous and more difficult to treat," said Wallace. He is director of the Farncombe institute and professor of medicine of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster.

He added that the use of probiotics is being investigated as a potential cure for the small intestine damage.

The study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and a CIHR/Canadian Association of Gastroenterology Fellowship.

Bank of America Helps More Small Businesses Through New Loans ...

(Source: Business Wire) - Bank of America, a national leader in lending to small businesses, has increased its support of these vital economic contributors through several initiatives this year, including additional lending to, spending with and investing in small businesses.?With roughly four million small business customers, Bank of America understands the vital role of small businesses in the U.S. economy,? said David Darnell, president of Global Commercial Banking for Bank of America. ?That?s why we?re helping small businesses succeed through a wide range of efforts ? all aimed at building deeper relationships and growing this crucial source of new jobs.?

In the first half of 2011, new credit issued to small businesses was up more than 35 percent over the same period last year. Small businesses are defined as those generally with less than $20 million in annual revenues.

Businesses that have benefited from increased lending include Sentek Global, which provides engineering and information security services to governments and companies. Based in San Diego, Sentek Global needed more credit this year to support the hiring of new employees related to recently awarded government contracts.

?Our projected revenues and employment have doubled in the last two years,? said Eric Basu, founder and president of Sentek Global. ?To help with this unprecedented growth, we needed a financial institution such as Bank of America that understood our marketplace, our company and our strategy, and was willing to give us the resources we needed to succeed.?

In addition to more lending, Bank of America this year increased the amount in grants it is awarding to Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) and similar organizations to unlock low-cost capital for small businesses. Created as a $10 million program last year, the program has been increased to $12 million, which CDFIs can use to access up to $100 million in government lending capital. To date, CDFIs have accessed nearly $80 million in capital, which has been used to serve more than 7,600 local businesses and help create and retain more than 10,000 jobs.

Among the CDFIs that have leveraged these grants is the Western Massachusetts Enterprise Fund in Holyoke, Mass., which has extended loans to several local businesses, including a fitness center, an architectural firm, an animal chiropractic office, an antique furniture store and a beauty salon.

?At a time when many businesses face challenges in getting credit, Bank of America?s grant program has been invaluable for entrepreneurs and start-ups,? said Christopher L. Sikes, executive director of the Western Massachusetts Enterprise Fund. ?These grants have allowed our organization to provide very small businesses in our community with the money they need to succeed and grow.?

Bank of America also continues to hire Small Business Bankers to consult with small business owners at their place of business, giving customers convenient access to local small business expertise and a dedicated resource who knows their business. To date, more than 350 Small Business Bankers have been hired to assess business owners? deposit, credit and cash management needs, and the bank plans to hire approximately 1,000 Small Business Bankers across the U.S. by early 2012.

These efforts join other initiatives that have made more credit available for small businesses, as well as provided them with direct revenue.

Bank of America assembled the first pool of U.S. Small Business Administration 504 first-mortgage loans for sale under the SBA?s secondary market program. To date, the bank has purchased $68 million in loans, allowing loan originators to extend more credit to small businesses. In addition, the bank has pledged to increase its spending with small, medium-sized and diverse businesses by purchasing $10 billion in products and services over five years. In 2010, the first year of the pledge, the bank spent $4.1 billion with those suppliers.

?Without question, small businesses are essential to creating more jobs across the country,? Darnell said. ?Bank of America is doing more than ever to understand the changing needs of small business owners and provide them with the opportunities and resources they need to survive and thrive in this still challenging economy.?

Bank of America

Bank of America is one of the world?s largest financial institutions, serving individual consumers, small- and middle-market businesses and large corporations with a full range of banking, investing, asset management and other financial and risk management products and services. The company provides unmatched convenience in the United States, serving approximately 58 million consumer and small business relationships with approximately 5,700 retail banking offices and approximately 17,800 ATMs and award-winning online banking with 30 million active users. Bank of America is among the world?s leading wealth management companies and is a global leader in corporate and investment banking and trading across a broad range of asset classes, serving corporations, governments, institutions and individuals around the world. Bank of America offers industry-leading support to approximately 4 million small business owners through a suite of innovative, easy-to-use online products and services. Even SEC teams sometimes lose battle with TVs

(AP) ? Even the mighty Southeastern Conference is working harder to coax fans out of their living rooms and into stadiums.

Despite winning the last five national championships fans around the college football-crazed region are weighing the couch and flat-screen TV option vs. the in-person game experience, tailgating at a raucous stadium.

Nearly every SEC football game is televised so some fans are choosing to stay home ? especially for potentially ugly nonconference mismatches. All but eight games last season were televised beyond pay-per-view.

"The lounge chair and big-screen TV are the best seat in the house," insists Alabama fan Shane Roberson, who lives in Destin, Fla,. and has held season tickets since 2005.

Even opening matchups like Alabama-Kent State and Elon-Vanderbilt are only a click of the remote away, at least for fans in the nine-state region.

Missouri State-Arkansas and Montana-Tennessee are available online or by pay-per-view.

Since SEC teams have counted tickets sold rather than actual attendance, there's no way to gauge the count of ticket-bearing fans ? either visitors or home ? who take the homebody route. The league touts that stadiums were collectively 98.5 percent filled last season.

Nonetheless, there are enough empty seats for it to be a topic of discussion in football offices.

"I say all the time, 'Hey, we're competing against hi-def,'" Auburn associate athletic director Scott Carr said. "It's reality.

"There is no comparison to actually being there and having the opportunity to tailgate with your friends and relatives. You can't replace that sitting on a couch with hi-def television, but it certainly can provide one more reason not to come."

The stagnant economy also helps to make the lounge chair a more appealing option.

Tennessee fan Joe Stanley grew up in north Georgia attending games; now the IT project manager who lives just outside the Arkansas state line in Missouri said cost of tickets and travel has kept him home most fall Saturdays.

He and his wife plan to go to one Vols home game and two games at Arkansas, about 30 minutes from his home.

Fans are "still looking at $160 just to go to a local game," Stanley said. "It makes it a no-brainer situation I can spend $160 (on cable or satellite) to see every game without dealing with the crowd and the nonsense."

Carr said it has taken a little longer to sell out season tickets in recent years, saying he thinks it was initially "98 percent economy, 2 percent TV."

"Now that the TV thing's out there, I would say TV is probably more of a factor today than it was when it first came out," Carr said.

Auburn had two home games that weren't listed as sellouts during its national championship run last season. The precursor to the SEC title game matchup with South Carolina was a couple hundred shy.

Of the 85 SEC home games last year, 36 were not sellouts.

Sure, teams like Alabama, LSU and Florida have little or no trouble unloading season tickets in a league that has four of college football's eight biggest stadiums. Those three members of the recent national title club, along with Georgia, reported sellouts for all 27 home games in 2010.

It's often a case of the rich, well, staying rich. Florida and LSU said they exceeded their stadiums' listed capacities in every home game. Struggling teams like Vanderbilt, Mississippi and Tennessee combined for just three sellouts.

At Georgia, everyone who contributed $250 to the Hartman Fund got season tickets for this season, associate athletic director Alan Thomas said. He said that number ? the threshold based on the lowest amount paid ? was about $2,000 last year, and that was a fifth of the 2008 figure.

Tennessee will have an actual count of fans filing into 102,451-seat Neyland Stadium in 2011 after putting bar codes on its tickets.

The Volunteers started reaching out to fans in July who have had tickets in the past or "have some kind of connection or affiliation with the university," including three-figure donors that might otherwise not have gotten a personal touch, said Chris Fuller, an associate athletic director at Tennessee.

He said that seven-week phone effort netted 2,200 season ticket sales and brought in about $1 million.

"I think live attendance is a big-time topic not only in college athletics now but across the board," said Fuller, formerly a vice president for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers. "Everybody talks about discretionary income is a factor. I think discretionary time is a big-time factor with everybody's modern schedule.

"When you host 41 games (in the NBA), I can tell you that it's a big factor, but I think even when you host eight football games it's a factor too. I think live attendance at sporting events is a big topic in our industry in general."

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive acknowledges that the megabucks TV contracts with ESPN and CBS present a balancing act of exposure for the league and making "sure that our fans come to the stadium."

Schools are also working to cut out some of the hassle when there are 100,000 people in one place. Auburn hired the Disney Institute for a daylong session on customer service this summer for 35-40 staffers in hopes of enhancing fans' game day experience, Carr said.

Still, the comforts of home have become a formidable opponent for the SEC.

At Alabama, Roberson holds onto his tickets even if he might only make it to one or two games now that he has two young daughters. There's some 20,000 fans on the waiting list to snap them up if he doesn't.

James Evans, an Auburn fan living in Charleston, S.C., said he goes to fewer games nowadays because so many are on TV. He made the 7-hour trek for the first South Carolina game last season and plans to attend the SEC title game rematch in Columbia this season.

He mostly watches games at a restaurant with other members of the local Auburn club.

"It's just so convenient, you can sit there at table with giant-screen television surrounded by fans of just your school," the emergency room technician said.

The added bonus: "They'll bring you your chicken wings and they'll bring you your drinks."
