HTC Rhyme Hopes To Charm Consumers with Accessories (NewsFactor)

HTC has rolled out another Android smartphone. This one is called the HTC Rhyme, and it will run on the Verizon Wireless network.

HTC bills the Rhyme as a new kind of phone created for people who need advanced features but want a fashionable device. HTC goes so far as to call it elegant. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the beholder can choose a Rhyme that integrates several colors and plenty of accessories to personalize the device.

"HTC Rhyme represents an entirely new approach, based on recognition that there is a substantial group of consumers who want their phones to be more personal and complimentary to every moment of their day," said Scott Croyle, vice president of design for HTC.

A Multimedia Experience

HTC Rhyme offers a unibody design. HTC chose the materials, implemented the curves and set the dimensions to make the phone feel good in your hand. You can choose from fancy-named colors like Clearwater, Hourglass and Plum.

"We believe this clean, intuitive experience and signature design is a testament to HTC's ability to interpret what customers have said they want in a mobile device," said Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. Walden noted how the Rhyme integrates hardware, software and accessories in a differentiated way.

The phone has a 3.7-inch WVGA, super LCD display and stereo sound. It sports a 5-megapixel camera that includes auto-focus, power LED flash and instant shutter. Photo-taking and -sharing elements, including face detection, work to guarantee photos are in focus even in high-action moments. The camera, for example, can take five consecutive shots of a scene. There's also panoramic mode, which lets you stitch several photos together for ultra-wide views.

A Fashionable Device

"The HTC Rhyme is definitely a phone that appears to be targeted more towards a fashion-oriented user," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner. "It shows how mature the phone market has become in terms of being able to break these phones down into different categories of devices. These categories show by function not only what they can do but also down to what they look like and what color they are."

A locked home screen on the Rhyme can be customized to display the most important content, making it quick and easy to see social updates, photos, the weather forecast or even taking a picture by simply turning on the display. And a new twist on the HTC Sense experience offers an all-new home screen that is cleaner, aiming to make it easier to preview appointments, messages or other content.

On the accessories front, the Rhyme offers a docking station, a sports armband, headphones, a Bluetooth headset, a car speaker and Charm. The Charm is a small, light-emitting cube that attaches to the phone by a cord that can dangle from your bag and also be used to quickly pull the phone out of your bag. Charm is a means to discretely alert you to incoming calls or messages while the device is deep in your bag.
