Carey Olsen?s strategic approach to human resources (HR) has been praised at the UK national HR Distinction Awards 2012, which were held in Birmingham on 24 January, when the Channel Islands law firm was awarded the prize for Distinction in Added Value.
The award recognised that Carey Olsen has achieved excellent business outcomes through the way it approaches the selection, reward and management of people.
The HR Distinction Awards were hosted at the 10th annual HR Directors Business Summit and attracted entries from a diverse range of UK-based businesses including Barclays, LV, Oracle and Standard Life. Other category winners included Boots, Tata, Experian and a number of UK public sector organisations.
Chairman of the panel of judges, David Fairhurst, said: ?The high standard of entries was impressive and gives great hope that the better management of human resources in these difficult economic times can give businesses significant competitive advantage.?
The award for Distinction in Added Value celebrates the demonstration of added value created from the successful implementation of HR and people strategies including measuring the direct and profitable results that HR strategies can achieve. The demonstration of HR?s input into commercial improvement, profitability, performance growth and the overall commercial and strategic acumen of the HR Director were key measures for the winner of this award.
The panel of judges noted that Carey Olsen?s ?people and performance strategy?, which was developed in 2008, represented a significant development in the way people are viewed and managed in a professional services firm. In particular the panel agreed that the highly measurable approach to the strategic management of people was a key contributor to client satisfaction and business success.
Mr Fairhurst, said: ?(Carey Olsen?s) was a terrific entry which demonstrated how the HR team made a clear and quantifiable contribution to their organisation?s bottom line, earning a place for themselves at the heart of the business? strategic decision-making processes. A worthy winner of a competitively-fought category.?
Carey Olsen HR director Simon Nash accepted the award and said the firm?s approach to HR enabled it to deliver a consistently superior client service.
?Carey Olsen has developed and implemented a contingent reward approach which shifts the balance towards greater performance-based remuneration and aligns the interests of individuals with the commercial priorities of the firm.

The firm has also developed a suite of assessment tools for different levels and roles which enables higher predictive validity and more reliability in selection decisions.
