Chavez to Obama: I'd vote for you, and you for me

CARACAS (Reuters) - With both presidents facing tight re-election fights, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez gave a surprise endorsement to Barack Obama on Sunday - and said the U.S. leader no doubt felt the same.

"I hope this doesn't harm Obama, but if I was from the United States, I'd vote for Obama," the socialist Chavez said of a man he first reached out to in 2009 but to whom he has since generally been insulting.

Chavez is running for a new six-year term against opposition challenger Henrique Capriles, while Obama seeks re-election in November against Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Venezuela's election is next weekend.

"Obama is a good guy ... I think that if Obama was from Barlovento or some Caracas neighborhood, he'd vote for Chavez," the president told state TV, referring to a poor coastal town known for the African roots of its population.

Chavez is one of the world's most strident critics of Washington and his 14 years in office have been characterized by diplomatic spats and insults at the White House.

He called former U.S. President George W. Bush a "drunk" and the "devil." After an initial overture to Obama came to nothing, he said the new president had disappointed progressives the world over and was the "shame" of Africans.

But Chavez was back in a conciliatory mood in a TV interview with friend and former vice president Jose Vicente Rangel.

"After our triumph and the supposed, probable triumph of President Obama, with the extreme right defeated here and there, I hope we could start a new period of normal relations with the United States," he said.

"Obama recently said something very rational and fair ... that Venezuela is no threat to the interests of the United States," he added.

Since coming to office, Chavez has projected himself as the head of a global "anti-imperialist" movement inspired by his friend and ideological mentor Fidel Castro of Cuba.

Relations with Washington improved briefly after Obama took office in January 2009 and promised more engagement with Latin America. Chavez toned down his tirades against the "Yankee empire" and shook hands with the new U.S. leader at a summit.

But months later, he accused Obama of sticking to Bush's foreign policies and capitalist agenda, and the tirade against the United Sates began again.

Despite the ideological gulf between Washington and Caracas, both sides take a pragmatic approach when it comes to business, with OPEC member Venezuela remaining the United States' fourth biggest crude supplier.

Study points to potential for improvement in the care ... - Health.am

? Epilepsy ? ? Neurology ? Sep 28, 2012

Routine screening for psychiatric, cognitive and social problems could enhance the quality of care and quality of life for children and adults with epilepsy, according to a study by UC Irvine neurologist Dr. Jack Lin and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Amedeo Avogadro University in Italy.

Physicians who treat those with epilepsy often focus on seizures, Lin said. However, patients show an increased prevalence of psychiatric issues (mood, anxiety or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders), cognitive disorders (in memory, language or problem solving) and social difficulties (involving employment or personal interactions). The relationship between epilepsy and these complications is complex and poorly understood. Lin said they may present greater problems for a patient if left untreated.

Study appears today in The Lancet.

?Screening for psychiatric, cognitive and social comorbidities is essential not only in established cases but also with newly diagnosed epilepsy,? Lin said. ?By doing so, we can ensure that these issues are treated and that patients have a better quality of life.?

He emphasized that screening should also be conducted prior to any new drug treatment.

Problems that occur in conjunction with childhood and adult epilepsy are referred to by doctors as comorbidities, meaning that they have a greater than coincidental chance of appearing alongside each other though there is not necessarily a causal relationship between them.

The study suggests a number of possible factors responsible for these comorbidities, including the characteristics of epilepsy and its medication protocol, underlying brain disorders, and epilepsy-related disruptions of normal neurodevelopment and aging.

While experts have begun to recognize the effects of psychiatric, cognitive and social comorbidities in epilepsy, Lin noted, gaps remain in the early detection, treatment and prevention of these issues.

Apple on maps: 'We are extremely sorry,' working to fix it

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company is "extremely sorry" for the frustration that its maps application has caused and it's doing everything it can to make it better.

Cook said in a letter posted online Friday that Apple "fell short" in its commitment to make the best possible products for its customers.

He recommends that people try alternatives by downloading competing map apps from the App Store while Apple works on its own maps products.

The Cupertino, Calif., company had released an update to its iPhone and iPad operating system last week that replaced Google Maps with Apple's own maps application.

But users complained that the new maps have fewer details, lack public transit directions and misplace landmarks, among other problems.

Labour's immigration pains | Progress | News and debate from the ...

Crowd at Liverpool Street Station

There are still some senior Labour politicians, and a significant section of the liberal media, who continue to deny that immigration is one of the issues that most damages the Left.? Indeed, until the last couple of years, the standard response to any suggestion that immigration itself was problematic was to imply that this was racist. No debate was permitted, even as the number of arrivals continued to grow.

Immigration was a ?good thing?. Immigrants helped a dynamic economy become even more competitive, they filled jobs that nobody else wanted to do, and they kept inflation and wage rises at low levels even when the economy was buoyant.

Even today, barely a week goes by without the IPPR, or Jonathan Portes arguing that immigration has been good for the economy, and that the benefits of mass immigration far outweigh the costs.

The assertion that such a huge increase in the number of workers coming to the UK has had any effect on wages or employment has been repeatedly denied. This is rather astonishing as it will, after all, be the first time in economic history that an increased supply (of labour) has had no impact on the price (that is, wages).

So, have the fundamental laws of economics changed? Either there has been a paradigm shift or, more likely, the effect on wages have been ignored because it hasn?t (yet) concerned the affluent middle class

In any case, there are alternative interpretations. A House of Lords report found that there has been a downward effect on wages, especially for those at the bottom rung of the labour market. And the recent report by the Migration Advisory Committee, confirmed that immigration does have an effect on wages, decreasing those of lower-paid workers. In particular, the MAC estimated that: ?an extra 100 non-EU migrants are initially associated with 23 fewer native people employed?.

After losing the wages and employment argument, however, the same centre-Left pro-immigrationists argue that GDP has increased. Again, the House of Lords report pointed out that GDP, which measures the total output created by immigrants and pre-existing residents in the UK, is ?an irrelevant and misleading measure for the economic impacts of immigration on the resident population. The total size of an economy is not an indicator of prosperity or of residents? living standards.?

To put it bluntly, increasing numbers of voters are not prepared to pay the price of over-crowding, a diminished green belt and public services stretched to breaking point for an additional percentage point of GDP growth. The Left ignored the broader effects on quality of life, with increasing demands on housing provision, classroom sizes, traffic congestion or for health and social services. But there was no planning at all for the arrival of such large numbers as policy makers seemed to forget that migrant workers also need somewhere to live, that they travel, that they have families, and that they get ill.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the former editor of Prospect magazine, David Goodhart, was right when he argued that there is an increasingly acute dilemma, ? for progressives who want plenty of both solidarity (high social cohesion and generous welfare paid out of a progressive tax system) and diversity (equal respect for a wide range of peoples, values and ways of life).?

Now, as draconian spending cuts are being implemented the answer to these questions is becoming increasingly acute. At its heart is a problem that Michael Young and Peter Willmott?s Family and Kinship in East London highlighted half a century ago. Should the (possibly greater) needs of newly arrived immigrants trump the greater ?entitlement? of those who have lived longer in a community?

Who deserves a share of the cake, and how large should their share be? Is social housing allocation, for example, a matter of long term residency, nationality or hardship? Should benefits depend on how much one has contributed to society? What?s fair?

The last Labour government failed to introduce restrictions on the citizens of the new members of the European Union coming to work in the UK until it was far too late. In thrall to the demands of business for cheap and flexible labour, a nominally left of centre government lost control of its borders. And for too long, too many on the Left did not permit an open political debate about immigration, denouncing any criticism as racist.

Immigration remains a huge issue for voters, which is only likely to grow as recession deepens (which it will). Labour lost almost every seat in the south-east outside London and needs to win them back if it wants to regain power. But this does not mean that the people of Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Sussex are racist, or even Little Englanders. Britain is a hugely tolerant country which believes in fairness. It also has great ? and legitimate ? concerns about immigration. It is time for Labour and the Left to admit that too much immigration, too quickly, requires new answers rather than continuing to defend old nostrums.

Catalysis: Optimizing water splitting

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Computer simulations of a metal-sulfide alloy unlock the secrets to designing solar-powered catalysts that generate hydrogen fuel from water.

Partnerships can pay off when it comes to converting solar into chemical energy. By modeling a cadmium sulfide (CdS)-zinc sulfide (ZnS) alloy with special computational techniques, a Singapore-based research team has identified the key photocatalytic properties that enable this chemical duo to 'split' water molecules into a fuel, hydrogen gas (H2). The theoretical study was published by Jianwei Zheng from the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing and his co-workers.

Chemists had already identified CdS and ZnS semiconductors as promising photocatalysts for water splitting. However, both came with a drawback related to the size of their so-called 'band gap' -- the energy difference between occupied and unoccupied electronic states that determine photo-activity. While CdS can readily harvest solar energy because of its small band gap, it needs a metal co-catalyst to produce H2. On the other hand, ZnS requires high-energy ultraviolet light to initiate water splitting owing to its large band gap.

Recently chemists had overcome these problems by alloying CdS and ZnS together into a 'solid solution': a physical state where Zn ions are distributed homogenously inside the crystal lattice of CdS. Altering the proportion of ZnS in these alloys enables production of photocatalysts with tunable responses to visible light and high H2 evolution rates in water. Improving the design of a Cd-ZnS solid solution is difficult, because its underlying mechanism is poorly understood.

As a workaround, Zheng and his co-workers used a technique known as 'special quasi-random structures' (SQS) to mimic a completely random alloy with a series of small, periodic models. After carefully working to correlate experimental random hexagonal crystals with their SQS approximations, they calculated the electronic properties of the Cd-ZnS solid solution using hybrid density functional theory -- a computational method that gives accurate descriptions of band gaps.

When the researchers gradually increased the Zn content of their model alloy, they saw that the band gap deviated from a linear combination of the two components. This effect, known as band 'bowing', arises from volume deformations within the Cd-ZnS solid solution and is an essential parameter for predicting catalytic solar H2 production.

Further calculations revealed that the alloy's high catalytic activity stemmed from obvious elevation of the position of unoccupied electronic states, and a subtle change in the position of occupied electronic states, as the amount of Zn increased. But to retain strong light harvesting capabilities and to avoid premature corrosion, the team proposes an equal ratio of ZnS to CdS for optimal photocatalytic water splitting.

100,000 usernames, passwords exposed by IEEE

18 hrs.

IEEE, a worldwide organization of engineers, computer scientists and researchers, inadvertently exposed the usernames and passwords of 100,000 of its members, nearly 25 percent of its total?membership.

The discovery was made by Radu Dragusin, a teaching assistant in the University of Copenhagen's Department of Computer Science, on Sept. 18.

"Among the almost 100,000 compromised users are Apple, Google, IBM, Oracle and Samsung employees, as well as researchers from NASA, Stanford and many other places," Dragusin writes on?his blog.?

Dragusin said he did not make the "raw data" available to anyone but IEEE. In a statement to NBC News Wednesday, the organization confirmed the problem, but said it has "conducted a thorough investigation and the issue has been addressed and resolved."

The IEEE is also "in the process of notifying?those who may have been affected," a spokesperson for the group said, advising them to change their passwords, and apologizing to members for what happened.

Lest you think that engineers and scientists would?probably have lockbox-tight passwords, that doesn't appear to be the case. Dragusin did an analsyis of the exposed passwords, and surprisingly, some?of them were the?all-too-common and not-advised choices?including: "password," "123456," "abcd1234," "12345678" and "1234567890."

In describing what he does, Dragusin says he is working on a specialized search engine to help "clinicians aid in the diagnosis of rare diseases. For the future, I am looking for something exciting to do." It looks like he may have found it.

New Apple EarPods vs. original earbuds: Should you upgrade?

If you haven't yet upgraded to the iPhone 5, can you get some of that iPhone 5 experience by upgrading to Apple's new EarPods earbuds? At $29 they're not as expensive as high-end earpieces, but they're not exactly cheap either. Compared to the original Apple earbuds, the ones that shipped with every iPhone, iPod, and iPad up until the iPhone 5, are they a worthwhile upgrade, or are you better off waiting and just getting them for "free" with your next iOS device?

EarPods vs earbuds: Comfort and sound

The most noticeably new thing about the new EarPods is their design. The old earbuds used a ubiquitously round shape and speaker while the new EarPods have a more distinct, ergonomic shape that fit the ear canals in a more snug, comfortable fashion, and support a dual output setup.

I hardly ever used the original earbuds as, like many others, I find them ill-fitting and uncomfortable. After many years of submission grappling I have some gangly, nasty cauliflower ears. Yet, even in spite of my haggardly disfigurement, I find the new EarBuds fit quite comfortable and securely.

I am no audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, but due to the ergonomically snug fit of the new design, I found the sound from the earbuds to be more dynamic and had better range and base than the original earbuds. Also, because of the dual setup, they can do noise canceling to help make phone calls sound better as well.

EarPods vs earbuds: Remote and mic

Both the new EarPods and the original earbuds allow the wearer to control their iPhone, iPod, or iPad with an inline remote. You can play or pause, skip forward or back, fast forward or rewind, and of course increase and decrease the volume. And with it?s built in mic you can control calls and interact with Siri, or VoiceControl on earlier generation iPhones.

The remote and mic assembly in the new EarPods, however, is larger and much easier to fumble for, find, and use without looking. Likewise, the original earbuds also seem to have used a lower gauge of wire than the new EarPods which may affect durability.

The mic itself sounds about the same in both.

The bottom line

Overall, I think many people will be happily surprised with the new EarPods from Apple. They sound better, they fit better, and they're easier to use.

So what's the downside? The price tag. The EarPods are $29 and while that's nothing compared to ultra-high end earpieces that can cost hundreds of dollars, it's also not an insignificant chunk of change.

If you like the original earbuds and they work and fit fine for you, then there's no reason to upgrade to the EarPods. Save your money for now, and you'll get them for "free" anyway when you get your next iOS device.

If you hate the original earbuds but don't want to pay a hundred dollars or more for high-end alternatives, than at $29 the EarPods a re good low-mid range option. They sound good for the price, and have all the controls you need for your iOS device.

The new Apple EarPods aren't going to blow anyone's hair back, but while literally anything would have been an improvement over the original earbuds, the EarPods are a better than expected one for the price.

Arctic sea ice in 'uncharted territory,' say researchers (+video)

As Arctic sea ice melted to the lowest level ever recorded, researchers said they were unprepared for the speed of this facet of climate change. As Arctic ice melts, scientists worry it will add heat and moisture to the globe's climate system.

By Deborah Zabarenko,?Reuters / September 20, 2012

Arctic sea ice, a key indicator of climate change, melted to its lowest level on record this year before beginning its autumnal freeze, researchers at the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center?said on Wednesday.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The extent of ice?probably hit its low point on Sept. 16, when it covered 1.32 million square miles (3.42 million square km) of the Arctic?Ocean, the smallest amount since satellite records began 33 years ago.

Changing weather conditions could further shrink the extent, the center said. A final analysis is expected next month.

The record was broken on Aug. 26, when the ice?shrank below the record set in 2007. After that, it kept melting for three more weeks, bringing the ice?extent - defined by NSIDC as the area covered by at least 15 percent ice?- to nearly half of the 1979-2000 average.

"We are now in uncharted territory,"?Mark Serreze, the center's director, said in a statement. "While we've long known that as the planet warms up, changes would be seen first and be most pronounced in the Arctic, few of us were prepared for how rapidly the changes would actually occur."

The summer?ice isn't just dwindling. It is also thin, relatively fragile seasonal ice?instead of the hardier multi-year ice?that can better withstand bright sunlight.

"The strong late-season decline is indicative of how thin the ice?cover is," said NSIDC's Walt Meier. "Ice has to be quite thin to continue melting away as the sun goes down and fall approaches."

The Arctic?is a potent weather-maker for the temperate zone, and is sometimes dubbed Earth's air conditioner for its cooling effects. However, as ice?wanes and temperatures rise in the far north, the Arctic?could add more heat and moisture to the climate system.

More extreme weather?

"What happens in the Arctic?doesn't stay in the Arctic," said?Dan Lashof, a climate scientist at the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council. "This has a real impact on Americans where they live and work."

Melting Arctic?ice changes the shape and position of the jetstream, allowing tropical air to penetrate further north and Arctic?air to penetrate further south, Lashof said in a telephone interview, leading to more extreme weather.

"That is a truly staggering rate of melting, far beyond what scientists thought would happen a few years ago,"?Bob Ward?of the?London School of Economics?and Political Science said in a statement. "Policy-makers need to wake up to the scale and pace of the impacts from climate change."

Recent climate models suggest the Arctic?could be free of?ice?before 2050. But the observed rate of melting is faster than what is shown in many of the models, according to NSIDC scientist?Julienne Stroeve.

Both the?Northwest Passage?along?Canada's coast and the Northern Sea?Route along?Russia?were open to traffic this summer, and investors gathered in?Alaska?last month to discuss commercial and transportation opportunities for the Arctic.

The environmental group?Greenpeace International?took issue with that approach.

"Rather than dealing with the root causes of climate change, the current response from our leaders is to watch the?ice?melt and then divide up the spoils," the group's executive director,?Kumi Naidoo?said in a statement.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling the U.N. General Assembly that he wants to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy but that the time to do that is not unlimited.

Obama says that time after time, Iran has failed to demonstrate that its nuclear program is peaceful and has failed to meet its obligations to the United Nations. He also says the Iranian government has been propping up the dictatorship in Syria and supporting terrorist groups abroad.

The president says, quote, "the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

This is Obama's final international address before the November elections.

Exotic Animal Owners Aren't Registering Pets with the State | Scene ...

Exotic Animal Owners Aren't Registering Pets with the State

Posted by Kyle Swenson on Mon, Sep 24, 2012 at 4:01 PM

As we all know, despite a historically bad economy and record unemployment, one of the most high-profile issues tackled during the last legislative session was what to do with the exotic pets some Ohioans like to keep around the house. As sarcastic as that sentence can read, there were actually pretty compelling reasons to address the topic.

After some legislative mud wrestling down in Columbus, lawmakers passed a law that, among other things, requires exotic animal owners to register their special friends with the state. The needed info includes the location of the animals, the number, and the info on who tends to their health needs. The registration window opened on September 5th, and owners are required to have their animals street legal by November.

Unfortunately, pet owners aren't getting the message. According to the Sandusky Register:

Only one person has registered since the law took effect on Sept. 5, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Three others tried, but turned in incomplete forms. Their animals also didn't have a required microchip with identification implanted in them.

Now, the reason for this lack of participation might not actually stem from the fact that a person inclined to own an exotic animal probably isn't the type to keep an unobstructed channel open to general society, or at least into fine-print requests of government bureaucracies. Rather, the Ohio Association of Animal Owners, a group opposed to the legislation and running 8,000 strong, is considering a legal challenge.

Microsoft?s Yammer opens new office in Tech City

Tineka Smith Published 19 September 2012

The Duke of York opened Yammer?s new office on Tuesday as part of his commitment to promote the UK technology industry and London?s Tech City.

The new London office at Silicon Roundabout will consist of Yammer's EMEA leadership, marketing, sales, customer success and recruitment personnel. The company is also adding a new developer centre.

"Yammer's expansion in Tech City underlines again London's position as Europe's digital capital. London is a global magnet for high tech giants alongside a growing cluster of exciting start-ups," said London Mayor, Boris Johnson.

The company has gained an average of over 200,000 new users per month over the past 5 to 6 months.

Yammer's EMEA general manager, Georg Ell, says Tech city was an ideal choice for an enterprise social networking company.

"This move is a significant sign of the appetite for enterprise social networking and collaboration tools in the UK and EMEA at the moment," said Ell. "The new developer centre is a signal of the company's commitment to Tech City and continued investment in Europe and the UK in particular."

Yammer London Office

After a long period of market speculation, Microsoft announced its acquisition of Yammer in June this year as an all cash deal valued at $1.2bn (?769m).

Microsoft has said it will continue to operate Yammer as a standalone service, but it will operate under the Microsoft Office division. It will complement Microsoft's existing cloud offerings Office 365, Sharepoint, Dynamics and Skype.

Yammer will also be a key asset for Microsoft in its continued transition to the cloud.

The company confirmed that Microsoft will currently allow Yammer to keep its exisiting freemium model.

"We have an impact on Microsoft products and services now," said Adam Pisoni, Yammer's Co-founder and CTO. "It's amazing to see how open-minded and collaborative they've been."

Valencia's new stadium deal collapses

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:52 a.m. ET Sept. 22, 2012

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) -The future of Valencia's new Mestalla stadium remains in doubt after Spanish bank Bankia pulled out of a deal that was supposed to clear the way for its completion.

Valencia President Manuel Llorente said on Friday that Spain's collapsed real estate market was behind the setback. He said that the club is working with Bankia, which was nationalized by the Spanish government in May, for a "financial solution with the goal of finishing the new stadium."

Construction on Valencia's new stadium began in 2007 but a lack of funding brought it to a halt two years later.

Last December, Llorente announced a deal with Bancaja - which later merged with Bankia - that included the sale of the old Mestalla stadium and a loan to finish the new arena.

Nigeria halts plan for new, large banknote

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigeria's Central Bank says it has halted its plan to introduce a banknote five times larger than the biggest denomination in the country.

In a statement published Friday, the Central Bank said it made the decision to stop the plan to print the 5,000 naira note at the urging of President Goodluck Jonathan. Public outcry followed the bank's decision in August.

The introduction of a 5,000 naira note, worth $31.25, comes less than a decade after the country introduced a 1,000 naira note. Over that time, the worth of the naira continued its long slide and analysts believe it will continue to drop.

The bank also said it would stop its plan to change all notes from 20 naira, worth 12 cents, and lower into coins.

Friday Randomness : Love + Home Improvement - Jasmine Star ...

Y

esterday I met a girl at a home improvement center and we struck up a conversation. Yes, it was random (not to worry mom, I don't normally talk to strangers), but she was sweet and as we waited in line, she asked how I met JD. He was ambling behind us talking to himself about wood floors, shower heads, and shelves...leave him alone with his thoughts and he'll go HGTV in 2.5 seconds.

We met in high school, I said. She raised her eyebrows in surprise and I responded by telling her I still really like him. Like, I'd still write him a love letter in a spiral-bound note book and scribble his initials on my backpack.

It was then when I realized she'd been watching us. When JD reached for the top shelf German shower head, I scoured the bargain bin...when he asked about cedar wood, I inquired about the merits of bamboo. Or matchsticks. WOOD IS WOOD, RIGHT?

I explained to the girl standing next to me that my husband and I are as different as night and day, but somehow our love sits squarely in the afternoon. Even if it requires splurging on a German shower head or laying a matchstick floor.

This leads me to another installment of Friday Randomness...

8 reasons you should give talks | Final Bullet

Talks, events, conferences. We live in a golden era for public speaking. I?m convinced this is a very recent thing. I can remember a time when the only speakers you ever only came across were trying to sell you things. Hitler was a great public speaker.

But now it?s everywhere, preaching as mainstream communication, pitching what-you-reckon a totally normal, yet totally weird thing to do. It never occurred to me to try it until a few years ago when someone trusted me to have a go at their event. I really enjoyed it and have spoken at dozens of events since, including many of my own. I still don?t know why other people do it ? but I?m starting to see why people should do it. I?ve realised the people who need to speak most are the ones who want to least. Here?s why:

  1. It promotes your status. When you go to hear interesting people speak, you are aware that those speakers were ?chosen?. They have an automatic air of authority that all but the absolute worst performance up there can?t completely destroy. A speaker ? any speaker?? is someone to be listened to.
  2. It?s a buzz. It?s a good feeling, telling people something that you believe to be true, sharing an idea; teaching, generally. The persuasion is fun, the drawing strangers into one?s world is fun, the nerves are exciting, the feedback is rewarding.
  3. You?re giving them what they want. It?s a complicit con, and you are pulling it. Fundamentally, the audience is there because they want to feel the primal response that kicks in when someone steps up and takes crowd in hand. You?re up there giving them the rain dance they paid for, and no one will resent you for that.
  4. It?s interesting. It?s a distinct and unusual way of interacting with humans, and it?s an ongoing learning experience. Each room is different; some people will be nodding and smiling (look at those people most), some will have their arms folded and their feet on the chair in front. Crowds as a whole behave interestingly ? you can learn from the way they respond to you, and to each other. Great performers really talk to the audience, poor speakers turn inwards. You can?t replicate that anywhere else.
  5. It?s better than writing. Writing?s great, it means you never have to talk to anyone, look a stranger in the eye, think on the spot, get the wrong word, risk misinterpretation, have to explain yourself in a way you?re not comfortable with, or otherwise deal with anything too unpredictable or human, while you build your beautiful stories or arguments. Writing is power in the digital world. It is self-sufficient and precious. Speaking, on the other hand, is gestural, robust and exposing ? which is why many writers are uncomfortable with it. Written words build scaffolds of arguments and ingenious ideas, but speaking them directly into someone?s face is the best way to fill them out into practical ideas, get the fastest feedback you?ll ever get, and find out how silly you?re being.
  6. It gives you a voice. I?m afraid it?s still true that a woman in a mixed group is often doing well if she manages to finish a sentence without people talking over her, guessing what she?s going to say, or simply not listening. This has been my experience time and time again which is perhaps how I end up doing so much writing. But speaking is better than writing, remember? If you can?t say what you have to say in ?real life?, say it to 400 people. They won?t interrupt you. Most will listen. You will not believe the sense of relief at finally getting your point made.
  7. It helps get your thoughts straight. Perhaps due to the above, you never quite get to finish thinking deeply about something. If you want to understand how you feel about something and be forced to think honestly and rationally about it, write it up in a way that means you can tell it to a crowd of strangers. In my experience, if you believe what you?re saying, the only nerves left are the fun ones.
  8. It?s unapologetic. It?s still a sell. Some will buy, some will disdain. But because of the automatic atmosphere of respect for speakers at events, you will not be expected to apologise or back down. You?ll find out what you believe in and you will find people who?ll stand by you on it. Speaking gives a powerful injection of confidence into your ideas and abilities, and a fearlessness too, because you?ll realise that it simply doesn?t matter if others don?t agree.

What are you waiting for? Get up there.
