Latvia ahead of Finland in green energy | Baltic News Network ...

Author: Gatis Diezi??/LETA

European statistics office Eurostat has summed reports that, in 2011, Latvia took the second place in EU by the share of renewable energy in its total consumption.

33.1% of all Latvian energy came from renewables and, although Latvia could not reach the EU leader Sweden with 46.8%, it did manage to leave Finland third at 31.8%.

The number is a tad misleading, however, as it does not necessarily mean that Latvia is particularly dedicated to being eco-friendly. Latvia?s renewable energy mostly is electricity produced at its large hydro power plants inherited from the Soviet Union, Bbn.ee wrote.

Latvia also has several small wind farms, and a number of local governments heat their houses using biomas. However, when Latvenergo had to decide on a reconstruction project for its thermal power plant TEC-2, it explicitly rejected a proposal to make it biomas-powered and went for natgas instead.
