iPhone + 22 tools = There?s a case for that

Last November, I told you about an indiegogo project for the TaskOne iPhone case. The project surpassed their funding goal of $32,000 and they are now taking orders. The TaskOne is a thin profile case for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 that effectively turns your phone into a multi-tool. You didn’t read that wrong, [...]

Google Catalogs for Android and iOS to be mothballed on August 15th

If window shopping through Google Catalogs is your go-to lunch break pastime, you might want to sit down. Mountain View has proclaimed that the service's Android and iOS apps will no longer be supported when August 15th rolls around. Not all is lost, however, as the search giant will keep the digital product tomes alive online. Although Google Catalogs is meeting its end much like Google Reader did, something tells us we won't see replacements for this particular platform cropping up left and right.

Hello strangers!

Hello people of the good site of RolePlayGateway! As well as the neutral and evil people too! My names Tom, but you can just call me by my screen-name, uh, Lazyscreename. I'm just some 18 year welsh old bloke who live sin the UK that felt like re-taking up roleplaying again, after stopping for a while due to stress in real world, nothing interesting to talk about really.

I first started off by just playing around on a One Piece roleplay site, (stop making that face), and then dabbled with a few wider themed sites before the sudden non-activity, so have some bit of know-how of roleplay, but might be a bit rusty really, and more amateur than pro at it. I found and joined this site by simply typing in roleplay in google and looked around, and really thats the story. Not really adrenaline filled thriller of a story but it's a something. Well, almost a nothing.
As for roleplays I like, tend to go for more action-oriented stuff, as well as fantasy and sci-fi stuff, but pretty much don't mind trying out any sort really, which doesn't help with narrowing down choices to be honest.

I also like playing video games, watching cartoons, watching films, hanging out with my friends and aimlessly wandering around with them, and for some bizarre reason, making pointless lists, oh and bbq as well as caramel shortcake.

So, in conclusion, I like stuff, I want to roleplay, hello, and how are you people? Thank you for reading and putting up with my 'humour'. Or for not reading. Thank you in general I guess. Anyways nice to meet you people!

Is @Transport the Way Forward?

?This is literally not my father?s Congress,? House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster, R-Pa., told me in an interview a few weeks ago. It?s a blindingly obvious statement that carries more meaning than the mere words suggest, like saying you have to score more runs than the other team to win a baseball game. There?s a lot to unpack there.

Shuster?s Congress is not the Congress from the salad days of the mid-1990s when committee chairmen like his dad, Bud, were more powerful than the House speaker. It?s not even the Congress of six years ago, before the financial crisis and tea party anger ushered in a new era of austerity. Transportation issues in Congress are in transition, trying to find their niche in a post-earmark, tight budget landscape. That?s the overriding theme of a special issue from National Journal Daily, published last week, that goes inside the committee.

Shuster likes to say that his job now is more of a finesse game than a power game. As chairman, he is finessing infrastructure with a new online outreach effort?using social media, blogs, and community networking?in a campaign unlike anything the committee has seen before.

The committee staff plans to use ?Transport? as its tagline (or hashtag, or Twitter handle, or Web address, or headline, depending on the medium). The idea is that transportation affects everyone, so everyone needs to be interested. The concept is a 180 degree flip from the old days, when transportation legislation was written by and for the policy wonks; the most interesting parts (and I use that term loosely) were formula fights.

Now, Shuster will be doing Twitter Q&As. The committee will circulate ?Transport? YouTube videos. They might even ?crowd-source? legislative text on the Web. It?s the online translation of a statement he makes often in speeches to constituents: ?You don?t have to convince me that infrastructure is important. I?m sold. But you do have to convince everyone else.?

What would an online @transport community look like? What would it talk about? How would the conversation change from the inside-the-beltway jargon? What new ground might be broken? What should be preserved from the traditional mentality of the transportation community? How can the wonk community evolve? What are the dangers?

Dirty Money

?The results of the 2011 National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households indicate that insured financial institutions have an important chance to grow their customer base by expanding opportunities that bring unbanked and underbanked individuals into mainstream banking,? said Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Martin J. Gruenberg when he was still awaiting confirmation.

Save Time Make Money! A new stock idea each week for less than the cost of a trade. CLICK HERE for your Weekly Stock Cheat Sheets NOW!

The survey is the most recent one conducted by the FDIC, meaning the data are slightly antiquated but still broadly relevant. Nearly 24 million households in the United States ? one out of every five in the nation ? were under banked in 2011, according to the survey. This is up by 821,000 households since the last survey, in 2009.

While Gruenerg is correct ? the huge number of unbanked and underbanked households in the U.S. does represent a huge opportunity for federally insured banking institutions ? it also represents a huge opportunity for non-federally insured quasi-financial institutions. One out of four American households have used at least one alternative financial service, according to the 2011 survey, and 12 percent of households use one on a regular basis.

While not all alternative financial services are suspect, people with undeveloped credit scores are often subject to costly ? or even predatory ? lending and services practices. Non-bank lending in particular has historically been predatory. Most people are familiar with payday loans: short-term loans with extremely high interest rates that most experts urge people to avoid if possible.

However, with federal minimum wage at just $7.25 per hour and not indexed to inflation, more and more people are finding themselves financially distressed and in need of access to short-term loans to cover basic living expenses.

Save Time Make Money! A new stock idea each week for less than the cost of a trade. CLICK HERE for your Weekly Stock Cheat Sheets NOW!

The minimum wage issue is certainly not new, but the economic conditions of the post-crisis era have revitalized debate. Minimum wage was thrust into the spotlight during President Barack Obama?s 2013 State of the Union address, in which he called for an increase in the federal minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $9.00 per hour, and for the rate to be indexed to inflation.

Recently, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) and McDonald?s (NYSE:MCD) ? both major employers of minimum-wage workers ? have taken flak over payroll and employment policies. McDonald?s made headlines when it published a budget-management document that grossly underestimated the cost of living while simultaneously suggesting that a minimum-wage employee work 70 hours a week to make ends meet. Wal-Mart is in the mix for two reasons: because of a fight over the minimum wage in Washington, D.C., and because of its involvement in a?non-bank lending company.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman recently called attention to the practice of several major employers like Wal-Mart and McDonald?s in using payroll cards.

Payroll cards are not a new phenomenon by any means. Research firm Aite Group says $34 billion was loaded onto 4.6 million active payroll cards in 2012. The group forecasts that the amount loaded onto payroll cards will climb to $68.9 billion by 2017, and that the number of active cards is expected to grow to 10.8 million.

Save Time Make Money! A new stock idea each week for less than the cost of a trade. CLICK HERE for your Weekly Stock Cheat Sheets NOW!

At a glance, a payroll card functions like a debit card. Instead of being attached to a bank account, a person?s paycheck is credited to the card. Users can then withdraw cash at an ATM, spend directly from the card, or transfer the money to a bank account. But critics of the cards see a very fine line between this sort of financial mechanism and the idea of a ?company store,? in which employees are paid with credit that can only be redeemed at the business where they work.

And, as if the payroll cards weren?t enough, Wal-Mart?s involvement in a non-bank lending company called Progress Financial has come to light thanks to Bloomberg?s Businessweek.

Progress Financial ? or Progreso Financiero ? is a non-bank financial company focused on small, short-term loans. Specifically, the loans are targeted at the nearly 23 million non-banked Hispanics in the U.S. who are unable to access traditional banking services because of bad or limited credit. Businessweek?reports that the company reported 250,000 customers to date and expects that it will have as many as 1 million by the middle of 2014.

The loans issued by Progress Financial range between $500 and $3,500 and look a lot like payday loans, except with slightly lower interest rates of or below 36 percent. Like payroll at Wal-Mart, loans can be received on cards that can be used a lot like debit or credit cards. Loan payments can be made at Wal-Mart or other participation retailers.

Save Time Make Money! A new stock idea each week for less than the cost of a trade. CLICK HERE for your Weekly Stock Cheat Sheets NOW!

At a glance, the service is a reasonable way for non-banked people to get access to the credit they may need for essential purchases. But the fact that the company is led by a former Wal-Mart executive, has a Wal-Mart director on its board, and is a venture capital firm with the Waltons (Wal-Mart?s founding family) as the firm?s largest shareholder has raised some eyebrows. Wal-Mart representatives have emphasized that there is no direct relationship between the lender and the retailer.

Wal-Mart tried to get into banking business in the early and mid-2000s but faced opposition from unions and and the established banking community. Progress Financial is a workaround that gives the retailer a means to become more financially involved with many of the same people who work for and shop at its stores.

?We had always hoped there would be some relationship with retail,? James Gutierrez, who founded Progress Financial in 2005 and was its CEO until last year, told Businessweek. ?Wal-Mart is the low-price leader, and that appeals to a certain demographic. There?s a lot of overlap.?

Microsoft launches new Yammer extension for Google's Chrome

Microsoft and Google may be at odds much of the time, but Microsoft also must know there are lots of PC users out there that surf the web using Chrome's web browser. A few days ago, the company launched an add-on for Chrome that allows users quick access to Microsoft's Yammer business social networking service.

The official Yammer blog states:

The extension adds a Yammer tab to your browser menu, and lets you quickly share any web page you?re viewing? ? just click on the Yammer icon, choose which Group you?d like to post your message into, and share your own comments with a link to the page.

The extension will also put in a red notification number on the Yammer icon if any other people on your Yammer network are commenting on the web page you are viewing. Chrome users can download it now from the Chrome store.

So why did Microsoft release the Yammer extension for Chrome browsers first, rather than their own Internet Explorer? According to ZDNet, a Yammer spokesperson said they wanted to release it for just one browser to "observe usage and engagement to inform future support."

Yes, that doesn't actually answer the question of why the Chrome browser was picked first but the article does point out that Windows 8 already allows Yammer users to share web pages on IE via the Share Charm. There's no word on when the Yammer add-on will be released for other versions of IE.

Sony showing EverQuest Next this week

Sony Online Entertainment will reveal first details on EverQuest Next at SOE Live on Friday beginning at 12 p.m. PDT, the company announced through the event's website.

The August 2 debut event will be hosted by SOE president John Smedley, development director Dave Georgeson, and other members of the production team.

The EverQuest Next event will last 90 minutes and will be streamed through the SOE Twitch channel.

EverQuest Next was announced in 2010 during SOE's Fan Faire, now known as SOE Live.

Unlike 2004's EverQuest II, the new title will not be a continuation of the events that began in the 12-year-old original. Instead, the studio is positioning EverQuest Next as a "reimagining of the EverQuest universe," one that will have "familiar faces, races, and places" but operate as an alternate dimension and with a "clean slate."

"Our task now is to take the game and evolve it and make it into something new for today's fans. And I would liken that to the brilliant job J.J. Abrams did with Star Trek?the reimagining of it," Smedley said in 2011. "That's what we're doing, and we've got some cool new things in store for players with the next one."

Social media gives voice, hope to young cancer patient

It has been a long four-year journey for 16-year-old Lauren Scott, who doctors say is dying of cancer.

Lauren, who goes by the name ?Lola,? was diagnosed in December 2009 with metastic retroperitoneal undifferentiated soft tissue sarcoma. She has endured 36 radiation treatments, five different chemotherapy protocols and two relapses as tumors have spread to her lungs.

?It's getting harder and harder to breathe, and I know what that means,? Lola told Fox News in an emotional interview via Skype from Reno, Nevada.

But one thing has kept Lola going: ?social media.

And she hasn?t given up ? just check out her Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or website, where hundreds of people have followed her during the tough times, like when she shaved her head for cancer, and the good days, too, like when her family all got inspiring tattoos together.

?It?s a wonderful thing just putting it all out there and being vulnerable.?

- Lauren "Lola" Scott

She has even started her own wish list, #Lolasbucketlist, which includes skinny dipping, eating a Doritos taco, and her greatest hope ? meeting singer Demi Lovato.

Social media has endeared Lola to people across the country who find her story inspiring and, in turn, have made the process for Lola a little less painful, a little less lonely.

?It?s a wonderful thing just putting it all out there and being vulnerable,? Lola said. ?It's a good type of vulnerable though, and just having all these people gravitate toward me, say such nice things. When I think of them, it just makes me happy.?

Lola was inspired by YouTube stars 13-year-old Talia Castellano, who became famous for her make-up tips, and 18-year-old Zach Sobiech, who inspired millions with his song ?Clouds.? Both died from cancer within the last two months.

?When I first got sick I was looking for videos on YouTube on how to put on eyebrows. And I found nothing besides Talia's videos,? Lola said. ?I'm thankful that I have because she's got how to put on fake eyelashes, and how to make yourself not look pale from chemo.?

The social media platforms also are turning more attention to adolescents and young adult cancer patients. Lola is one of about 70,000 people between ages 15 and 39 who are diagnosed with cancer each year. Yet, this middle generation is often forgotten. Survival rates for teenagers and young adults have not changed in almost 30 years.

Experts say people in this age group are often delayed diagnosis of primary cancers; doctors have a poor understanding of the biology and etiology of the cancers that affect them, and get inadequate access and low rates of participation to clinical trials.

Matthew Zachary, 38, is the Founder of StupidCancer.org, a non-profit organization designed to empower adolescents and young adult cancer patients. Zachary was 21 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer, has since been in remission, but wishes he had social media by his side 17 years ago.

?This (cancer) is a life-changing experience, and it's difficult enough to be in that age group,? Zachary said of social media. ?So the idea of meeting somebody who has gone through that, that is your age, that gets what it's like is transformative.?

Zachary said while people like Lola say they are getting strength from social media, the world is getting more from them.

?There aren't as many cancer survivors in the world as there are people who've watched these YouTube videos collectively,? Zachary said. ?The general public is really hungry for inspiration and really hungry for people who show them what life is really about.?

Letter: More Leadership Needed from Town on Special Ed Mess ...

To the editor:

At its last meeting, the Board of Selectmen discussed expanding our elementary schools due to burgeoning enrollment. With members of the Board of Education in the room, I expected someone to ask about the swelling controversy regarding Special Education in Darien. ? Nothing.

It is not the Selectmen's job to set policy for the public schools, or to instruct the Board of Education how to spend its annual operating appropriation. But the Selectmen do have a leadership role in town. They can set the tone for how everyone regards the more vulnerable among us. As of this writing (July 28, 2013), they remain silent.

The CT Department of Education found that Darien violated State and Federal laws regarding the rights of special needs students and their families. New information about this shameful and embarrassing situation (including inappropriate actions by members of the Board of Finance) is revealed every week.1 What are our leaders doing?

On July 25th, the Darien Times astutely observed that the Board of Education's proposed (but not started) internal investigation could be compromised by its law firm's conflicts of interest.2 On July 26th, the Darien News reported that the Board of Education is complaining about the cost of complying with the FOIA requests that uncovered the wrongdoing in the first place.3 Neither revelation inspires confidence that the Board can effectively lead efforts to root out the rot.

E-mails acquired through FOIA requests show that members of the Board of Finance were willing to bankroll the Board of Education's efforts to justify flawed policy.4 Making open-ended financial commitments by e-mail is inconsistent with the Board of Finance's role to oversee Darien's spending in an open and transparent way.

Special Education is not an expensive nuisance; it's a civil right.5 Incurring costs to first defend and then correct avoidable civil rights violations, and to re-tool the damaged Special Education Department are the true expensive nuisances. Re-building trust will take more than money. That requires leadership.

Carbon tax raises costs, cuts jobs

ACCI chief economist Greg Evans has lashed out at the carbon tax, saying it has "encouraged a de-industrialisation trend in the economy" Source: News Limited

THE carbon tax has slashed hundreds of millions of dollars from company profits and forced struggling manufacturing firms to shift production - and jobs - offshore.

A national survey of Australia's $110 billion food processing industry has revealed nearly 30 per cent of businesses reported cost increases of 5 per cent or more since the carbon tax was introduced.

And 67 per cent of companies - including many small businesses - have been unable to pass on these higher costs to their customers.

Instead, they have been forced absorb the price hit on their bottom line.

Another audit by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry reveals 82 per cent of businesses report the carbon tax has reduced profits - a year since the greenhouse scheme was introduced.

Around 30 firms were surveyed by AFGC with several deciding to shift production overseas to escape the carbon impost.

While higher energy bills is the biggest expense, the carbon tax has also added to rising packaging, transport and other expenses.

One food processing firm said the carbon tax had added nearly $5 million to operating expenses - including $500,000 in packaging and $240,000 in freight and storage fees.

Murray Goulburn, Australia's largest dairy firm, says the carbon tax has added $14 million to its annual expenses for the year to June 30.

Kevin Rudd has accelerated plans to shift to a floating carbon price in order to reduce the impact on business. Source: News Limited

Robert Poole, general manager, shareholder relations, said Murray Goulburn "cannot pass on these costs" because the price of dairy was "primarily" set by the global market.

But higher energy bills remains the biggest cost burden for manufacturing with nearly 50 per cent of those firms surveyed reporting their electricity bill had jumped 15 per cent or more.

One of Kevin Rudd's first decisions after ousting Julia Gillard as Prime Minister was to accelerate by a year plans to shift to a floating carbon price - in order to reduce the impact on business.

But AFGC chief executive Gary Dawson said it was already too late for a number of companies who are "reassessing their production planning in response to high costs".

"For a big energy user the additional cost of the carbon tax on their energy bill alone runs to millions of dollars a year so of course it forces an assessment of whether there are lower cost options (offshore)," Mr Dawson said.

ACCI chief economist Greg Evans lashed out at the carbon tax and other green programs which he said "have encouraged a de-industrialisation trend in the economy".

"We are already seeing an impact on jobs and investment in industries reliant on energy. This includes food processing, plastics and chemicals, metal manufacturing and oil refining, where we have seen successive announcements of winding back investment or relocating production facilities offshore," Mr Evans said.

Innovation and Industry Minister Kim Carr said the Government's decision to move from a fixed to a floating carbon price one year early "will link Australian businesses with international markets, reduce carbon liabilities from 1 July next year and provide certainty for firms looking to invest in Australia's future".

"The food processing sector stands to benefit substantially from the Asian Century and Labor will do everything it can to see business realise the opportunities on offer," Senator Carr said.

Campaign manager quits but Anthony Weiner insists he won't leave race for NYC mayor

Mr Weiner confirmed that Mr Kedem has resigned but wouldn't say who is replacing him. "We have an amazing staff, but this isn't about the people working on the campaign. It's about the people we're campaigning for," he said after speaking at a Brooklyn church.

Meanwhile on Sunday, his rival for the Democratic nomination, Christine Quinn, speaker of the New York City Council, said Mr Weiner has shown "a pattern of reckless behavior, an inability to tell the truth and a real lack of maturity and responsibility."

"I don't think he should be mayor, and I think the voters, if he stays in the race, will make that clear," Ms Quinn said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Mr Weiner was forced to discuss his online behavior this past week after a gossip website printed excerpts of conversations Mr Weiner had with Indiana college student Sydney Leathers last summer.

With his wife, Huma Abedin, a former top aide to ex-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, alongside, Mr Weiner apologised and promised that the "behavior is behind me." He later admitted that he traded racy messages with at least three women since leaving office.

He vowed to stay in the race, saying he believed "people care more about their futures than my past with my wife and my embarrassing things."

Ms Quinn led the race before mr Weiner jumped in but slipped behind him in most polls over the past two months. But a one-day poll conducted after the latest revelations has her leading Mr Weiner in the race for the Democratic nomination. The mayoral primary is on September 10, and the general election is November 5.

Mr Kedem had managed the re-election of John DeStefano Jr. to a 10th term as mayor of New Haven in 2011 and worked on Hillary Clinton's failed 2008 presidential campaign.

Financial loans for A Low Credit Score Accumulate Steam | Banking ...

In recent times, there are other and a lot more people who find themselves taking to lending options for a low credit score greatly. This absolutely provides extensive related to the fact several people out there have truly a low credit score circumstances to deal with they?ve got very past due on the lending options previously and so have received the somewhat unenviable trustworthiness of getting defaulters, which often creates a scenario in which they are rejected credit by most financial businesses.

This is typically the top worry on the minds of a lot of people out there they feel that given that they are now being supplied a benefit which doesn?t come across naturally or easily to those in their ilk, viz. previous defaulters like them, this benefit would surely occur at the hefty high quality.

Nicely, which is not exactly the circumstance. Predetermined that rates of interest on negative credit lending options are usually somewhat substantial but as well, it will be inaccurate to say that they?re astronomically substantial. Instead, one can merely say that they?re a little higher, maybe just somewhat eco-friendly tea?s health benefits lots of other this kind of lending options, keeping in mind their special standing as lending options given out even to anyone who has otherwise very past due on the lending options previously. So essentially this is often construed a lot more as a possible hard work on the part of the financial businesses to have a bit of of balance and danger minimization, given the profile of individuals, than truly an effort to gather huge earnings.

Bob McDonnell's Wife Takes a Cue From Sarah Palin

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's reliance on political money to outfit his family with a lavish lifestyle is once again facing some major scrutiny. McDonnell's wife used campaign funds to keep herself outfitted in expensive clothing while the couple's on the campaign trail.?

RELATED: The Governor, His Wife, Their Cook, and the FBI

The Washington Post reports Maureen McDonnell used a Opportunity Virginia PAC?credit card (since revoked) to spend $9,800 on expensive clothing from stores like Nordstrom, Macy?s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor and Ann Taylor at a time when the couple's penchant for using political money to facilitate a comfy lifestyle is under an big microscope. Of course, like the suspect $15,000 worth of clothes from Bergdorf Goodman she received from a donor, these purchases were all in the interest of keeping up with her duties as Virginia's first lady:?

Maureen McDonnell complained to officials at Opportunity Virginia PAC that she didn?t have the wardrobe or resources necessary for her new role as first lady, according to a person familiar with the PAC?s operations, who spoke on condition of anonymity to maintain a relationship with the McDonnells.

Does this all sound vaguely familiar? That's because Sarah Palin did the exact same thing during her campaign as John McCain's vice president. It seemed Gov. McDonnell had buried his troubles once and for all when he?repaid over $100,000 in loans and gifts?he received from?a key campaign fundraiser last week. But this new shopping spree revelation -- along with gifts like the use of a private jet, covering the catering at?McDonnell's daughter's wedding, and a $15,000 Bergdorf Goodman shopping spree for McDonnell's wife from campaign donors -- will put the spotlight back on McDonnell's financial behavior.?

RELATED: Obama Beating Romney in Virginia; Santorum Leads in Louisiana

But have no fear, McDonnell has no plans to keep any of the clothing. A spokesperson said the family was planning to donate the used clothing to charity once her husband is out of office:?

Rich Galen, a private spokesman for the governor and first lady on matters related to the investigations, said that Maureen McDonnell was borrowing the clothes, which would be donated to charity after Bob McDonnell completes his term in January. The PAC also said that the items will be returned to the committee and then donated to charity.

McDonnell is running for reelection right now. What happens to Maureen McDonnell's closet if he wins another term and she still has to give everything away remains unclear.?

A Virginia State Board of Elections spokesperson explained to the Post how McDonnell's shopping spree is within the law. "If they wanted to use the money to send their kids to college, they could probably do that," Nikki Sheridan said. "There is no restriction on clothing, grooming or legal fees unless you?re shutting down your PAC." The gifts McDonnell received from a donor were legal under Virginia's notoriously lax ethics laws, too. That said, it's still rare for anyone to bend the clothing rules as much as Maureen McDonnell has. Perhaps that's why some of the purchases were masked as "travel expenses" or "event expenses" on financial reports.?

(AP) ? Omnicom Group Inc. and Publicis Groupe SA say they are combining in a "merger of equals" that will create the world's largest advertising firm, one worth more than $30 billion.

The combined company will be called Publicis Omnicom Group and be jointly led by Omnicom CEO John Wren and Publicis CEO Maurice Levy as co-chief executives. The move is designed to bolster the companies' focus on growing Asian and Latin American markets such as China and Brazil, where they each have ramped up operations to counter lackluster growth in weak European markets.

But although a combined firm will allow for more pricing power in general, the decrease in competition could present regulatory hurdles in the U.S. and Europe. Client conflicts also could be an issue, as rivals such as Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo, McDonald's, Yum Brands' Taco Bell, Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble now find themselves under the same umbrella.

Omnicom Group Inc., based in New York, owns BBDO Worldwide, DDB Worldwide Communications Group and TBWA Worldwide, among other agencies. Paris-based Publicis Groupe SA runs its namesake agency as well as Leo Burnett Worldwide, Saatchi & Saatchi and DigitasLBi. Their merger creates a company with combined annual revenue of about $23 billion, leapfrogging them over current London-based industry leader WPP PLC.

For the first year, Omnicom Chairman Bruce Crawford will serve as non-executive chairman of the new company. He will be succeeded by Elisabeth Badinter, the current Publicis Groupe chairwoman, and daughter of its founder, for the second year.

Omnicom, which also owns public relations firms such as Fleishman-Hillard, Porter Novelli and Ketchum, reported 2012 profit of nearly $1 billion on revenue of $14.22 billion. Earlier this month, the Madison Avenue giant posted second-quarter earnings that topped analysts' average forecast, though revenue growth of 2 percent fell just short of expectations.

Founded in 1986, Omnicom generates just over half of its revenue from U.S. clients, and about one-quarter from European and British markets combined. The company's stock has risen 31 percent in the last 12 months, recently peaking at $67.43 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Omnicom will benefit from Publicis' strategic shift in the last few years toward digital operations, as the French company beefed up its digital marketing profile with the acquisitions of Digitas, Razorfish, Rosetta, Big Fuel and LBi. Publicis, which had revenue of $8.78 billion in 2012, had targeted generating 75 percent of its revenue in digital and fast-growing countries by 2018, according to a recent investor presentation.

And the move gives Publicis, which has faced questions about who will succeed 71-year-old Levy, access to Omnicom's well-regarded senior leadership, said James Dix, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

A major concern, though, is whether the two companies can strike a harmonious balance of power ? something that can be difficult in mergers of similar-sized companies based in different countries.

"You have these fiefdoms that keep people from playing together. One company is based in Paris, one is in New York. Where is the power center?" Dix said in an interview Saturday.

Dix expects that top executives are comfortable with the structure of the deal, but the adjustment may be more difficult for the next level of executives who run the firms' units.

"Now they have to fit together into a broader organization," Dix said. "If you lose clients or have defections of senior executives then you have something that looked good on paper but didn't quite play out."

His closest challenger down the stretch was compatriot Dustin Johnson whose chances of victory came to an abrupt end at 17 where a poor drive cost him a triple-bogey seven.

Out With the Old: 10 Mesmerizing Demolition GIFs

Out With the Old: 10 Mesmerizing Demolition GIFs

We tend to think of demolition as destructive: dynamite, dust, and plenty of fireworks. But as a New York Times article recently described, demolition in dense cities is, more and more often, a "stealth" operation, where a building is dismantled over a number of weeks.

The article describes the slow demolition of Tokyo's 40-story Akasaka Hotel, which was taken apart, piece by piece, at a rate of two stories every ten days. The building was built in 1982 by Kenzo Tange, a venerable modernist who is much-loved by historians and architects?part of the reason why the stealth demolition seemed like a good idea. ?We want people not to really see the demolition work," the development manager told the NYT. ?The noise level is 20 decibels lower than the conventional way, and there?s 90 percent less dust leaving the area.?

Stealth aside, there are plenty of old-school demolitions still happening in the world, for better or worse (check out the 300-pounds-of-dynamite job that took place earlier this year in El Paso, below). After Architizer rounded up some of the best last week, we thought we'd add a few of our own favorites to the mix. There are dozens of great videos and GIFs out there, though, so post your own in the comments, below.

Biden gives GOP a tea party label

RICHMOMD, Va. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden continued a busy political pace Saturday, appearing with Virginia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate at the swing state's premier party fundraiser and ridiculing this fall's conservative Republican statewide ticket as extreme captives of tea party ideology.

Biden brought about 1,000 Democrats to their feet repeatedly at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner barely four months ahead of the nation's only competitive governor's race. His appearances at state fundraisers haved evoked speculation that he is laying his footing for a 2016 presidential bid.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we stand for equal rights and women's rights," Biden said. "With virtually zero support from the Republicans, the president and I have moved the country from the worst recession since the Great Depression to 38 months of private-sector growth."

With Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe at his side, Biden took aim at McAuliffe's opponent, state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who won the GOP nomination with strong tea party support and his socially conservative ticket mates.

"There is so much they stand for that is so at odds with the value set of Virginians," Biden said.

The vice president warned that a GOP victory in Virginia would only galvanize the tea party's grip on the GOP in Congress, where he said even longtime moderate Republicans are fearful of a primary challenge if they don't do the tea party's bidding.

"They are so afraid of a challenge by the tea party that they vote against what is the right vote. Imagine what they will do to Barack and me if Terry McAuliffe loses," he said.

A McAuliffe victory, he said, would "send a strong signal to Republicans across America that there's no reason to be afraid of these extreme guys."

Before speaking to activists who paid $175 or more per ticket, Biden joined McAuliffe, a longtime confidante of Bill and Hillary Clinton, in surprising patrons at a Richmond restaurant, shaking hands before wolfing down two plates of fried whiting.

Among other campaign events this season, Biden aided Democratic Rep. Ed Markey in a Massachusetts special election ? Markey won, thus keeping Secretary of State John Kerry's old seat in Democratic hands ? and held a series of closed-door "donor-maintenance" events in Washington.

Sen. Tim Kaine, elected on the same Virginia ballot as President Barack Obama last fall, said it's too early for Democrats to take sides in a potential nomination contest between Biden and Hillary Clinton, but he counseled both to try pragmatism over progressive partisanship.

"I think the Virginia Democratic success model is, we'll let the other guys be the ideology people and we will be the work-together, compromise, make-things-happen party. That's been the model that has allowed Dems to win," said Kaine, like McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chairman.

In speeches warming up the crowd, Kaine and Sen. Mark Warner congratulated gay-rights activists for the ruling that cleared the way for same-sex marriages in 13 states but not in Virginia, where a 7-year-old amendment to the state Constitution prohibits it. And both hailed the immigration reform bill that they supported ? it now faces an uncertain future in a conservative Republican-led House.

Virginia Republicans fired back, using Biden's visit as an occasion to attack the ticket for Obama's clean-energy initiative, warning that it will devastate Virginia's struggling coal industry and drive up utility bills.

State GOP Chairman Pat Mullins called it "the most anti-coal slate of candidates ever fielded in the history of Virginia," a distinction intended to lock up the rural, rugged but independent southwestern tip of the state for the GOP in a neck-and-neck governor's race.

Republicans weren't alone in protesting Biden's trip. About three dozen environmental activists opposed to construction of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline stood on a street corner as Biden's motorcade passed, waving placards that read "Say No to Big Oil" and chanting "Hey, Joe, you ought to know, Keystone pipeline's got to go."
