At the 18th, the 32-year-old pulled his drive into a bunker before safely finding the fairway with his second shot and he eventually two putted for a par-five.
His closest challenger down the stretch was compatriot Dustin Johnson whose chances of victory came to an abrupt end at 17 where a poor drive cost him a triple-bogey seven.
The first tee-shot flew out of bounds before the next landed in a bunker and, in the end, Johnson had to hole out from seven feet to avoid taking an eight.
The 29-year-old had to settle for a 70 and a four-way tie for second place alongside William McGirt, Jason Bohn and Matt Kuchar.
